Removals, surveyed first

  • 01 — Survey Room by room, in person or by video walk-through.
  • 02 — Written quote One fixed price, with the extras named upfront.
  • 03 — Move day Same crew, labelled placement, settling hour included.

We pack the loom,
the ladder and the
awkward corner shelf.

Wild Loom is a small removals crew for houses, walk-up flats, weaving and ceramics studios, and offices under a dozen desks. Every job is surveyed before it is priced, so nothing on the invoice is a surprise on the day.

No hourly meter running while you find the keys. If the survey shows the job is smaller than you thought, the quote goes down, not up.

Bright, sparsely furnished living space with a sofa, pale walls and tall windows, ready to be packed and cleared.

A three-bedroom clearance the morning before loading — floor runners down, cartons labelled by room, nothing stacked against the glass.

What we move

Four lanes, each with its own crew size and access checklist.

Pick the lane that sounds like your move

The quote changes far more with access than with volume. Stairs, lift bookings and the distance from the van to your door set the length of the day — so that is what we ask about first.

  • Whole-house moves

Two to five bedrooms, loft and garage included if you want them. We bring wardrobe cartons on rails so hanging clothes travel upright, dismantle the beds and flat-pack tables, and rebuild them in the right rooms before the van leaves.

    • Crew of three or four
    • One full day, early start
    • Loft and garage optional
    • Beds rebuilt on arrival
  • Walk-up flats

Narrow landings, half-turn stairs and the sofa that only went in once. We measure the tightest point at survey and tell you honestly whether it comes apart, goes through a window on straps, or has to be sold before you move.

    • Banister and corner guards
    • Extra carrier above floor three
    • Lift booking advice
    • Doorway measurements taken
  • Studios & small offices

Looms, kilns, wheels, printing presses, desks and server cabinets. Heavy, bolted and usually irreplaceable. We photograph assemblies before stripping them, bag every fixing to its own frame, and reassemble to the same photographs at the other end.

    • Fixings bagged and labelled
    • Out-of-hours loading possible
    • Crated glass and screens
    • Floor protection throughout
  • One heavy thing

An upright piano, a cast-iron bath, a chest freezer, a stone-topped island. Booked as a half-day with the right straps, skates and a crew who have moved that shape before, rather than squeezed onto the end of someone else's job.

    • Half-day booking
    • Skates and stair climbers
    • Route walked beforehand
    • Single-item cover available

How move day runs

The same five stages whether it is one room or a full house.

Nobody enjoys not knowing the order of the day

So here it is, start to finish. You will have the crew leader's name and the arrival window the evening before, and the sequence below does not change once it is agreed.

  1. 01Two to six weeks out

    Survey and inventory

We walk every room, open the wardrobes, look in the loft and measure the narrowest doorway on the route. You get a written inventory to correct, because the quote is built from that list and not from a guess about square footage.

  2. 02Within two working days

    Fixed-price quote and pack plan

One price, with any extras named separately so you can take them or leave them. The pack plan says which rooms we box, which you box, and how many cartons to expect — delivered flat a week ahead if you are packing yourself.

  3. 03Move day, from the agreed start

    Protect, then load

Runners on floors, guards on door frames and banisters, blankets and stretch wrap on upholstery. Loading goes heavy-first and room-last, so the kitchen boxes you need that night come off the van early rather than from behind a wardrobe.

  4. 04On arrival

Placement by label, not by pile

Every carton is labelled with its destination room and a priority mark. We put them where they belong, build the beds first so there is somewhere to sleep, and keep the hallway clear the whole time.

  5. 05Before we leave

    The settling hour

Included in every quote. Doors rehung, table legs refitted, the sofa turned the way you actually want it, mirrors hung if the fixings are there, and all the packing debris we created taken away with us.

What's included

Read the right column before you compare two quotes.

The line items that usually hide in the small print

Most removals complaints are not about care — they are about a charge nobody mentioned. Everything on the left is inside the quoted price. Everything on the right is priced separately and only added if you ask for it.

Standard inclusions compared with separately quoted work.
Inside the quoted price Quoted separately
Survey, written inventory and a fixed-price quote A same-week survey when the diary allows it
Blankets, stretch wrap, straps, floor runners and door guards Timber crates for art, mirrors, glass tops and kiln shelves
Dismantling and rebuilding standard beds, tables and shelving Fitted wardrobes, bunk systems and wall-mounted units
Wardrobe cartons on rails, used on the day and taken back A full packing service, room by room, the day before
Labelled room-by-room placement at the new address Unpacking onto shelves, with all cartons collected afterwards
The settling hour, and removal of our own packing debris Overnight hold on the van between completion dates
Goods-in-transit and public liability cover Declared-value cover for a single item above the standard limit

Two things we will never charge for after the fact: a longer carry because the van could not park where we planned, or a stage of the day that ran over for reasons on our side.

Packing notes

What we hand over at survey, in short.

If you are packing yourself, pack like this

You will do a better job than anyone if you know the five rules the crew works to. Nothing here needs special kit beyond the cartons we drop off.

  • Small boxes for heavy things

Books, tiles, tools and records go in double-wall cartons no larger than a milk crate. Big boxes tempt you to fill them, and a carton nobody can lift safely gets handled badly.

  • Label the room you are going to, not the one you are in

Write the destination room and a priority letter: A for the first night, B for the first week, C for whenever. We place by that label, so C boxes can go straight to the spare room.

  • Paper, not newsprint, around china

Plates on their edges like records, glasses upright, nothing loose in the middle. Ink transfers onto glaze and takes longer to wash off than the packing took.

  • Keep one box back and keep it with you

Kettle, mugs, chargers, bedding, medication, tools for the beds, the kids' and pets' essentials. It travels in your car, not in the van, and it is the difference between a good first night and a bad one.

  • Leave drawers alone — mostly

Clothes can stay in light chest drawers; we strap them shut. Empty anything with liquids, glass, documents or electronics, and empty every drawer in a glass-fronted or antique piece.

Pale fabric sofa with cushions in a sunlit living room, the kind of upholstery wrapped in blankets and stretch wrap before loading.
Upholstery is blanketed first and stretch-wrapped second — never wrapped directly, which traps damp against the fabric.
Kitchen with open shelving, crockery and small appliances, the room that takes the longest to pack before a move.
Allow a full evening for the kitchen. It holds more fragile items than the rest of the house put together.

When the crews are free, and how far ahead to ask

We run a small number of crews on purpose, which means the diary is honest rather than elastic. If a date is gone we will say so instead of booking you and reshuffling later.

  • Weekday morningsBook 3–4 weeks ahead

A 07:30 arrival and the whole day in front of us. The right choice for any whole-house move, and the slot that fills first in every month.

  • Weekday afternoonsBook 2 weeks ahead

A 12:30 arrival, suited to studios, single rooms, one heavy item, or a move where you only get keys at midday.

  • SaturdaysBook 5–6 weeks ahead

One crew only, morning start. Worth asking early if you cannot take a weekday off, and worth having a weekday fallback in mind.

  • Short noticeInside 72 hours

Sometimes possible when a crew comes free. Ask — we would rather tell you yes or no the same day than leave you waiting on a maybe.

Three things worth checking before you pick a date

  • Floors and lifts. Above the third floor without a lift we add a carrier, which changes the price. A bookable goods lift at either end usually saves more time than it costs.
  • Where the van can stand. A long carry from the van to the door is the single biggest cause of an overrunning day. If a parking suspension is needed, most councils want about a week's notice.
  • Completion dates that can move. If your date is tied to a chain, tell us at survey. We hold a provisional slot and only firm it up when you are certain, at no extra cost.

Questions

The seven we are asked at nearly every survey.

Answered before you have to ask

If your question is not here, put it in the notes field on the quote form and it will be answered in writing with the price.

How far ahead should I book?

Three to four weeks for a weekday house move, five to six for a Saturday, and two weeks for a studio or single-room job. Surveys themselves usually happen within a few days of asking, and a survey does not commit you to a date.

If your completion date is not fixed yet, book the survey anyway — the written quote stays valid while you wait for a date.

Do I need to empty drawers and wardrobes?

Clothing can stay in the drawers of a light chest; we strap them closed and carry the unit as one piece. Everything else comes out: liquids, glass, documents, electronics and anything heavy enough to make the carcass flex.

Empty every drawer in an antique, a glass-fronted cabinet or anything on castors. Hanging clothes stay on their hangers and transfer into wardrobe cartons on the day.

What can't the crew carry?

Fuels, gas bottles, paint, solvents, fireworks, anything corrosive, and open or perishable food. Plants travel at your own risk and are better in your car. Pets always travel with you.

We also will not take a piece apart if doing so would clearly destroy it — fitted units built into a wall, for example. We will say that at survey, not on the day.

How much do stairs, lifts and parking change things?

More than volume does. Each flight above the third floor without a lift adds roughly an hour to a full house and often an extra carrier. A bookable goods lift can take an hour off the same job.

Distance from the van to the door matters just as much: a fifty-metre carry at both ends is close to half a day of walking. We work all of this out at survey and show it on the quote.

What happens if my completion date moves?

Tell us as soon as you know and we move the booking to the next slot that works, with no change fee and the same quoted price. Chains slip; it is not treated as your fault.

If the gap leaves you between addresses, we can hold the load on the van overnight. That is quoted separately so it only costs anything if you need it.

Do you take the empty boxes away?

Yes. Wardrobe cartons and all our own blankets, wrap and guards go back on the van the same day. Any packing debris we made is cleared during the settling hour.

Flat cartons you packed yourself are collected free on a later round once you have unpacked, or taken straight away if you have already emptied them.

How is the quote actually calculated?

From four things: the surveyed inventory, access at both addresses, the distance between them, and the date you choose. Those give a crew size and a number of hours, which become one fixed price.

It is not priced per box or per hour on the day, so a slow morning at your end does not cost you more. The only figure that can change after the quote is one you add to it yourself.

Tell us the shape of the move

Enough to arrange the survey and give you a realistic bracket in the reply. A general area is fine — we do not need the full address until the date is agreed.

We reply with the survey options and a price bracket. Nothing is booked until you confirm in writing.
